Mark Sarvary – Director of Laboratories

Mark is an educator and a natural scientist. His goals are to explore the ever-changing biological interactions in nature and to develop more effective ways to engage students, fellow scientists, and the publics. He directs the Investigative Biology Teaching Laboratories at Cornell University and he is the founder and faculty adviser of the Science Communication and Public Engagement undergraduate minor. He uses education research to develop modern pedagogical techniques, improving undergraduate students’ learning experiences and their skills in experimental design, information literacy, and science communication. He also trains graduate and undergraduate students on how to become better teachers. His contribution to education has been recognized by the Core Value Staff Award in 2013, he received the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Teaching Award of Merit in 2017, and he was named a Merrill Outstanding Educator by a Cornell Presidential Scholar in 2018.

Joseph Ruesch

Joseph Ruesch – Education Postdoctoral Associate

Joseph Ruesch is an evidence-based educator who is assisting with instructing BIOG 1500. As a former teaching assistant for the course, his significant experience working in our labs is a huge asset and informs his practical approach to pedagogy. He manages our team of undergraduate teaching assistants as well as co-teaches BIOG 6500, the invite-only pedagogy course open to graduate students serving as BIOG 15oo TAs. In addition to these duties, Joseph also contributes to the curriculum at large and leads several of our lectures, teaching 400+ undergraduate students over the course of the semester.

KC Ryan – Lab Coordinator

KC Ryan is the Lab Coordinator for BIOG 1500 and, as such, ensures that the weekly labs are set up on time and running smoothly. Most of her work is behind the scenes, but be sure that the labs would not run without her tireless efforts.

Chelsea Maceda – Assistant Lab Coordinator

Chelsea oversees the learning management systems for BIOG 1500, ensuring the seamless integration and operation of the various learning technologies used throughout the course. In addition to these responsibilities, she oversaw the creation of a Whisper Room podcast recording studio, which serves students, staff, and faculty from across the Cornell community. The studio hosts around 200 reservations per year, supporting a wide range of academic and creative projects. Chelsea’s role in BiOG 1500 covers a lot of ground, just like the woman herself—she enjoys running in her free time!

Whitney Schwander – Course Coordinator

Whitney is the Course Coordinator for BIOG 1500. She manages all administrative aspects of the course—from scheduling and communication to social media—ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. If you have any questions, she’s your go-to person—whether she has the answer or can direct you to someone who does. With a bachelor’s degree in forensic science, she’s passionate about history, the macabre, and anything else that’s intriguingly unusual!
